  Sadly, the work of a VDOT cleanup crew is usually only noticed when they do NOT do a good job. I’d imagine it’s not often that someone who picks up carcasses for a living gets singled out by a member of the community for a well deserved token of appreciation for the work he does. I would like to take this opportunity to do so. On June 23rd of this year, while I was out of town, Pembroke had a most horrendous thunder storm. My house-sitter said “the lightening was going sideways!” During this storm, one of my dogs, a known escape artist with extreme sound sensitivity issues, was frightened by the thunder, and managed to escape my chain link kennel compound by literally twisting the gate latch around the post until he could squeeze through. The padlock was still intact on the gate! He ran in a frenzied panic until he reached highway 460 where he was struck by a vehicle and killed. The next day, his remains were picked up by a VDOT crew working out of the Pearisburg office in Giles County. We received a phone call from one of the crew members. No doubt he could tell from the dog's general condition and ID tags that this pet was loved and normally enjoyed life as an indoor dog. Calling to tell someone you don’t know that you just picked up the remains of a beloved pet is difficult at best. It’s not likely to be a requirement of his job description. But this man felt that if it were his own pet, he would want to know so he could at least stop frantically searching and achieve some closure.   I live in Orchard Hill Lane of Clover Hollow in the Newport area of Giles County. I would like say the person who graded our dirt road last did EXCELLENT work. I would also like any info of when the state will be cutting tree limbs that are so thick alongside the road. especially in the curves. Adam
